These posters were circulated between 1927 and 1951<\/span>, t<\/span>he<\/span>y<\/span> were a quick and <\/span>straightforward way<\/span> for Chinese<\/span> Christ<\/span>i<\/span>ans to spread <\/span>their<\/span> mess<\/span>ag<\/span>e. That is until Christ<\/span>i<\/span>anity <\/span>was highly frowned upon by the state<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cAnti<\/span>-Christan<\/span> policies intensified in 1950 \u2026<\/span>When the United States <\/span>and other Western nations imposed an embargo on China and froze Chinese assets in the US, Mao<\/span> reacted by expelling most missionaries from China in 1951.\u201d<\/span><\/span>1<\/span><\/span> But they ha<\/span>d 24 years of circulation and <\/span>distr<\/span>i<\/span>bution<\/span> to share their messages.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

These specif<\/span>ic <\/span>posters<\/span> were printed by the<\/span> Christan Literature Society Shanghai,<\/span> as part of <\/span>their<\/span> Neighborhood <\/span>Sunday School Lessons.<\/span><\/span>4<\/span><\/span> Crafted just for kids to teach them valuable lessons.<\/span> <\/span>Many of <\/span>these posters<\/span> are not as bright as the other ones <\/span>comm<\/span>o<\/span>nly<\/span> distributed during this time<\/span>,<\/span> but they do convey multiple messages as <\/span>i<\/span>s typical of Chinese Christan Posters. <\/span>In all the posters the <\/span>children are never shown alone but together with others forming a community<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The<\/span><\/span> A walking Song<\/span><\/span> poster <\/span>depicts<\/span> students walking into a building single file. This song is the most overtly Christan of the songs. By pairing the song with an image of students walking diligently it links the idea that <\/span>belief<\/span> in God is not always easy<\/span>, <\/span>it will take work but to<\/span>gether they will be able to walk side by side with God.<\/span> The children are <\/span>beginning their day walking into school and <\/span>declaring<\/span> to follow Jesus as they begin their day.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The <\/span>A School Song<\/span> poster <\/span>teaches the students how to properly say goodbye and how to bless others. <\/span>The poster also helps kids to <\/span>r<\/span>em<\/span>em<\/span>ber to be respectful to those who are older than them, as well as to their fellow classmates.<\/span> The students in the song sing a blessing to their teacher, a <\/span>figure who under <\/span>Confucianism<\/span> would have been revered, is not shown to be <\/span>revered<\/span> on the same level as the<\/span>ir<\/span> fellow classmates, showing that God loves and blesses everyone the same. <\/span>It reminds them that even when they leave <\/span>a <\/span>place, that God is with them.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

The <\/span>A Game Song <\/span>in addition to promoting Christan worship, promotes good behavior among kids and reminds them to treat everyone with kindness. The Picture shows the kids playing and laughing.<\/span> Enjoying life outside of school<\/span> with the comfort that God loves them.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

The <\/span><\/span>A <\/span>happy, good <\/span>family <\/span><\/span>poster<\/span>,<\/span> promotes the family worship of the lord, the family unit, and filial piety.<\/span> Part of the song goes \u201cThank you, Heavenly Father for giving me parents<\/span>, parents<\/span> give me food and shelter<\/span>\u201d This sentiment would fit right into Chinese society and be right at home with the concept of <\/span>filial <\/span>p<\/span>iety<\/span> a cornerstone of Confusion thought. The <\/span>picture<\/span> shows the family sitting around the table as they all look at the bible together learning and growing in their faith.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The <\/span>Children of the World Song <\/span>goes beyond God<\/span>‘<\/span>s basic teaching that everyone is created in his imaged and is loved equally by him. <\/span>It shows the children that not only are they able of worshiping God at <\/span>a young <\/span>age<\/span>,<\/span> but that God loves them and will <\/span>ac<\/span>cept them no matter what.<\/span> This Poster was printed by the Christian Literature Society to help promote the message of inclusivity to children.<\/span> This is one such lesson children may have learned at home <\/span>from<\/span> their parents, as <\/span>shown<\/span> in the <\/span>previous<\/span> poster.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/div>

These posters <\/span>stri<\/span>ke<\/span> me as simple and effective.<\/span> Many have bright colors and fun graphics to draw the viewer<\/span>‘<\/span>s attention.<\/span> These posters<\/span> above<\/span> all target children<\/span>,<\/span> using<\/span> s<\/span>hort songs to <\/span>hel<\/span>p<\/span> deliver their messages. Teaching children about God is always a little tric<\/span>ky, from the concepts, to how much to <\/span>t<\/span>eac<\/span>h<\/span> them and how fast. These <\/span>posters<\/span> all make it <\/span>very simple<\/span>. They teach about God<\/span>‘<\/span>s love and <\/span>kind<\/span>n<\/span>ess<\/span>. They also serve the function of showing kids how to b<\/span>ehave <\/span>like good <\/span>Christan <\/span>c<\/span>hildren and<\/span> show children in a variety of <\/span>spaces<\/span>. <\/span>The posters show the kids going to school, leaving school, playing with friends, and eating with their famil<\/span>ie<\/span>s, a full day of acti<\/span>vity and throughout it the posters teach the kids<\/span> that God is with them<\/span> throughout <\/span>all <\/span>of it<\/span>. <\/span>The songs are not overly Christan but do introduce God as a loving figure, and a family-friendly <\/span>entity. <\/span>With <\/span>Christens<\/span> being a minority population at the time, song use was a way to bring a community together<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cMusic can be an important part of how people make themselves feel like a national group or even how they <\/span>def<\/span>i<\/span>ne<\/span> their nation.\u201d<\/span><\/span>2<\/span><\/span> Songs are a way to get emotions and concepts across to people in a way that will stick with them. The Chinese <\/span>Christens<\/span> used songs to help kids understand Gods love and <\/span>as a way to<\/span> slowly introduce the topics of love and Jesus to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

This <\/span>Christan<\/span> propaganda was a quick and <\/span>easy way<\/span> to spread the message of <\/span>God’s<\/span> love in a way that might not draw to much attention to the one sharing the message, or to the one <\/span>obs<\/span>erving<\/span> it.<\/span> Sense during<\/span> this time there w<\/span>ere<\/span> already compet<\/span>ing<\/span> ideologies between the <\/span>Communists<\/span> and <\/span>Nationalist<\/span>s<\/span>, supporting Christianity was not the most popular <\/span>option<\/span>. <\/span>Pr<\/span>opaganda<\/span> is not always negative<\/span>, and these posters are <\/span>a great example<\/span> of how it can be used for good as well.<\/span> B<\/span>y <\/span>propaganda<\/span> I mean the <\/span>\u201cSpreading<\/span> information, music, or ideas that promote a particular agenda<\/span>…<\/span>for it propagates ideas.\u201d<\/span><\/span>3<\/span><\/span> Propaganda is<\/span> not always <\/span>simply<\/span> printed, as in the posters, or <\/span>presented via digital<\/span> media. <\/span>These poster<\/span>s<\/span> combine two types, printed, and musical propaganda to help spread <\/span>new ideas<\/span> and <\/span>create<\/span> a new <\/span>cultural<\/span> group of Chinese Christan<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

These posters <\/span>provided<\/span> inspiration<\/span>, and instruction to many Chinese <\/span>Christ<\/span>i<\/span>ans<\/span>. They ranged from being drawn in bright colors<\/span> to black and white, and from tradit<\/span>io<\/span>nal <\/span>art forms<\/span> to<\/span> modern cartoon styles.
